While D&D Beyond is a very good, and probably the best tool for building PCs, perchasing all you need when you already own every physical book is a pretty bitter pill to swallow. I was just thinking about this as I had the idea that software to help create characters might be even more useful now that most of my (and presumably many others' ´) gaming is happening online with Skype and VTTs. Just use D&D Beyond, you can export a PDF of the full sheet when youre done.
